About Iwane Matsui

A man of five foot and four inches, General Matsui had many health problems. He was in charge of the Battle of Nanking in 1937. General Matsui never let his illness stop him commanding the Battle unless it was severe.

General Matsui treated offenders in his army severely. A officer was faced with execution after a rape offence. General Matsui gave his whole army a speech about discipline. Mistreating the war dead was also enough to General Matsui to give out lectures.

The statue of Koa Kannon was built by General Matsui in 1940. He and his wife, Fumiko gave prayers for the deceased of the Second Sino-Japanese War.
